Frequently Asked Questions
Motor Vehicle
Registration
New residents must register their vehicles
and obtain Florida license tags within 30 days of establishing legal
residency or by the day they begin work in Florida, or by the day
they register their children in school. Proof of insurance, previous
out of state title, auto identification number, odometer reading
and your present driver's license are required for vehicle registration.
Vehicles may be registered at the Tax Collectors offices. Contact
the Tax Collectors Office at (772) 462-1650.
Florida Drivers License
If you're new to Florida, you're 18 or older,
and already have a valid driver license from another state or country,
getting your FL license can be really simple. You can use your current
out-of-state license as your primary form of ID, so you'll only
need a secondary form of identification. A $20 application fee will
also apply. In most cases you will be required to take the vision
and hearing tests only. However, the DMV has the authority (and
reserves the right) to require additional testing on a case-by-case
basis. We strongly recommend that you make an appointment by calling
(772) 398-2892 in Port St. Lucie and (772) 468.3957 in Fort Pierce.
Boat Registration
If you own a boat and plan to keep it in
Florida for more than 90 days, you must register it with the Tax
Collector's office. Fees vary according to the length of the boat.
Contact the Tax Collectors Office at (772) 462-1650.
Voter Registration
You may register to vote through the St.
Lucie County Supervisor of Elections offices with convenient locations
in Fort Pierce, St. Lucie West and Port St. Lucie. To register you
must: (1) be a U.S. citizen; (2) be a Florida resident; (3) be 18
years old (you may pre-register if you are 17); (4) not now be adjudicated
mentally incapacitated with respect to voting in Florida or any
other state; (5) not have been convicted of a felony without your
civil rights having been restored pursuant to law; (6) not claim
the right to vote in another county or state. Please note that you
must be registered at least 29 days before the election in which
you wish to vote. Contact the Supervisor of Elections at (772) 462-1500.
Pet Licenses
All dogs and cats that are located in Port
St. Lucie must have a pet license. To obtain a license, you must
bring proof of rabies vaccination to the licensing office in St.
Lucie County or to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, Annex Trailer
in Port St. Lucie. You may call them at (772)871-5042. In Fort Pierce
it is required that cats and dogs wear the rabies vaccination tag,
but do not have to be registered.
School Registration
To register children for school you must
go to the St. Lucie County School Board office of Student Assignment,
located in the Orange Blossom Business Park located on Okeechobee
Road, in Fort Pierce. When registering children in local public
schools for the first time, parents should present the following:
One document showing proof of residency, a certificate of immunization,
proof of medical examination during the past 12 months, birth certificate
and a copy of the child's last report card is helpful. St. Lucie
County School Board Student Assignment can be reached at (772) 429-3930.
Fishing Licenses
Florida regulation requires that nonresidents
obtain a license for salt-water fishing. Residents are not required
to obtain a license for salt-water fishing from land, but must obtain
one for salt-water fishing from a private boat. Those exempt include
fishermen under the age of 16 or over age 65. Nonresidents and residents
must obtain licenses for fresh water fishing unless under the age
of 16. Licenses are available at the County Courthouse, Wal-Mart,
K-Mart or most local bait and tackle shops. For more information
on salt-water fishing, call the Florida Marine patrol, (561) 624-6935.
For more information on fresh water fishing, call the Florida Game
& Fresh Water Fish Commission, (561) 625-5122 or (800) 432-2046.
Hunting Licenses
Hunting licenses permit the hunting
of any bird or animal in season except on game reserves and posted
private property without permission. Hunting Licenses may be purchased
at the Tax Collector's office, Wal-Mart, K-Mart or many local bait
and tackle shops.
